Italy sees major boom in blueberry farming: acreage up 172% since 2015

Italy’s blueberry industry is experiencing explosive growth, with the area under cultivation expanding by 172% since 2015 and production tripling in the same timeframe. Thanks to its diverse climates, growing consumer interest, and high market prices, the country is quickly becoming a notable force in the global blueberry trade.

Once largely confined to Piedmont—where commercial cultivation began in the 1960s—blueberry farming has now spread throughout northern and central Italy. There’s also increasing momentum in southern regions like Calabria and Sicily. Traditional varieties are giving way to newer, improved cultivars.
