Italy’s agri-food sector remains a cornerstone of the national economy and a leader in Europe. In 2023, the industry generated approximately €42.4 billion in added value, the highest among EU countries. When considering the entire food supply chain—including agriculture, processing, agritourism, and agro-energy—the total contribution is estimated at €75 billion.
Despite receiving only 11% of the EU’s agricultural subsidies, Italy ranks third in the EU in total agricultural production, following France and Germany. However, Italy outperforms both in terms of efficiency and value creation, leading the EU in added value with 17.4% of the total. Italian agriculture also achieved a 4.5% reduction in intermediate production costs in the last year.
