It was just like old times at the 40th anniversary celebration for John's Garden restaurant on June 28. John Musante, who just celebrated his 96th birthday the day before, and his son Jim, who ran the business until 2012, joined current owner Boyen Kinov, trading stories and anecdotes with old and new friends and customers at Malibu County Mart.
John Musante recalled the origins of the shop. He's a third-generation Italian American greengrocer. "My grandmother came to America in 1872 with her three children," he told the Malibu Surfside News. "Her destination was the California gold country, but when she got to Philadelphia she realized how far California was and started to build a business selling fruit. She sold strawberries."
