The late Larry (Lawrence) Ambrosino, a passionate educator who touched the lives of thousands of borough children in at-risk communities and mentored many of them through adulthood, will be honored at a street renaming ceremony next month. The longtime Staten Island educator died at the age of 72 at home in Annadale on Aug. 29, 2020, following a two-and-a-half year struggle with leukemia.
But his legacy will live on and a portion of Maple Parkway will be renamed outside PS 44 in Mariners Harbor, according to his wife, Dorothy Ambrosino. The street, at the northwest corner of De Ruyter Place and Maple Parkway, will be renamed Educator Lawrence E. Ambrosino Way. The educator grew up in the neighborhood and graduated as valedictorian from PS 44.
