Because of political and economic conditions after the Italian Unification, over sixteen million Italians emigrated to North and South America, Australia, New Zealand and other countries between 1861 and 1914 in search of better lives. During that period, the longings, successes, hopes and disillusionments of the Italian Diaspora were expressed and popularized in various group music and songs--the Canzoni Napoletane, in particular. This presentation will review and explore the lyrics and themes of several masterpieces of that genre. A professional cantatore will perform and audience participation is invited. Song lyrics and a brief Neapolitan dictionary will be distributed.
