When we think of Florence and of Michelangelo, David is surely the first artwork that comes to mind. It has become an icon – of Michelangelo himself, of the city of Florence, of the Renaissance as a whole, and even of sculpture as an art form.
And rightfully so: David is basically perfect, with its purity of form, its absolute smoothness, and the way it captures the tension of a young hero just moments before his challenge. Truly an unquestionable masterpiece. Still, as much as I admire David, there is something that always unsettles me when I visit the museum space that hosts it.
