European cities dominate the global ranking for walkability, with 45 of the top 50 spots belonging to metropolitan areas across the continent – and Italy leads the way. A study published in Nature Cities analyzed the average walking times to reach key destinations – such as schools, hospitals, supermarkets, restaurants, and government offices – in more than 10,000 cities worldwide.
Milan, long recognized as Italy’s economic capital and a hub for fashion and luxury, ranks first among global cities with over 500,000 residents. On average, Milanese need just six minutes to reach essential services, and 98% of the population lives in so-called “15-minute neighborhoods,” where daily needs can be met within a quarter-hour walk from home.
