The brand-new Ambrogio15 in Pacific Beach is hoping to change locals' perspectives on Italian food with its modern take on the genre. Opened on August 1 by Giacomo Pizzigoni, Andrea Burrone and Luca Salvi — three entrepreneurs with MBAs from San Diego State University — the restaurant is promising to go beyond what's often found in Italian establishments across San Diego. What you won't see, says Pizzigoni, are clichés such as portraits of Frank Sinatra, Sophia Loren or other decorating touches that lend a "Godfather-esque" feel.
Instead of a classic Italian look, the restaurant takes its inspiration from Milan, which Pizzigoni compares to downtown Manhattan in its level of sophistication. That means you'll find sleek black and red iconography of items like a Valentina typewriter, the city's tram and other vibrant images. The images and bold typography show up on the menu (pictured at the top) and the walls of the restaurant.
