Opportunity attracted thousands of Italians to early Omaha. Here are some of their stories

Early next month, Omaha's Italian-American community will take to the streets for the 85th annual Santa Lucia Festival. The five-day festival honors the patron saint of Carlentini, a small town in southern Sicily.

It is no accident that Carlentini would be at the center of local Italian heritage celebrations. Many of Omaha's early Italian immigrants hailed from this modest community and a neighboring village, Lentini. Among them were the Salerno brothers, Joseph and Sebastian, who made their way to Omaha in the 1890s.
