Philly's Passyunk Ave. evolves into dining destination

Passyunk Avenue, the main street for South Philadelphia, a traditionally Italian-American neighborhood, used to be known as the place to buy school uniforms, salami and cheese, and fancy dresses for First Holy Communions. Over the past few years, the avenue has evolved into one of the city's hippest dining and shopping destinations, while still keeping its neighborhood flavor.

Now you can dine on everything from sushi and contemporary American fare to regional Italian and Mexican, or visit classic spots like Marra's Pizza and Stogie Joe's Bar. The neighborhood, which starts at the famous rival cheesesteak stands of Pat's and Geno's and is a short subway, bus or taxi ride from Center City, has also sprouted a wave of clothing boutiques, vintage shops and stores specializing in mid-century modern furniture and other home accessories.
