The man suspected of killing a Massachusetts police officer has been shot and killed by law enforcement. Officer Ronald Tarentino Jr. was conducting a traffic stop on Rochdale Street in Auburn when an occupant of the vehicle opened fire on him as he approached the car early Sunday morning. Police say the shooter, identified as Jorge Zambrano, 35, fled the scene in a vehicle setting off a massive daylong manhunt. Police tried to negotiate with Zambrano for hours outside a home at 31-32 Watch St. in Oxford but the suspect burst from a bedroom closet, opened fire, and was fatally shot by police.

In the exchange of gunfire, Zambrano shot an 18-year veteran of the State Police force in the shoulder. The wounded trooper, whose injuries were non-life-threatening, was transferred to UMass Memorial Medical Center. "Nobody has respect for them anymore," said a reeling Sharon Tarentino, 63, as she grieved her 42-year-old son — a happy-go-lucky, Italian kid from Worcester County.
