The venerable Paolo's, which in 1958 introduced then-agricultural San Jose to fine dining, is closing Aug. 8. Carolyn Allen, the daughter of owner and founding chef Jack Allen (born Giacchino Paolo Aiello), announced the news "with deep regret" on the restaurant's website Wednesday. "After six decades in downtown San Jose, and 24 years at our RiverPark location, our landlord has chosen not to extend our lease."
A request for a postponement was denied, Allen said in an interview, leaving Paolo's with the sudden closure decision. She said it was too soon to speculate on next steps for her and husband, Jalil Samavarchian, the co-manager, maitre d' and sommelier. "We're going to take a little breather and then see what looks like the next step."
