Louis 'Lefty' Cepull Memorial Park - Aliquippa, PA,
This local tribute was brought to the area by the immigrants from Patrica, Italy, where St. Rocco is the patron saint. They settled primarily in the Plan 11 section of Aliquippa, where the original festas began.
At that time, much of the festa was centered in the homes surrounding the MPI Club, which was founded by those immigrants. The Mass, parade, doll dance, fireworks and band concerts were the focal point of the entertainment, but the homes where people gathered were what made those celebrations in the '20s, '30s and '40s cherished by so many who relive those days.
The present committee has made a special effort to keep those traditions alive while also moving into the 21st century.
St. Rocco is the patron saint of many towns in Italy, and some will remember that his feast day was celebrated in the movie "Godfather II." He was born in Montepelier, France, about 1340 to a wealthy family, but gave up the good life when he went to Italy, and through his prayers is creditied with ending a plague that was devastating the country.
His statue, which will be displayed during the Mass and parade, shows him pointing to a wound on his left leg and dog by his side who is credited with saving his life when he was also stricken with the plague. He died penniless in a prison cell in 1378 in his native Montpelier. His body is enclosed in a glass tomb in the Church of St. Rocco in Venice, Italy.
