Every year on the 6th and 7th of July, the small village of Sedilo, located in the Oristano province of Sardinia, comes alive with the traditional celebration of L’Ardia di San Costantino. The term ardia is derived from the verb bardiare, which translates to “protect” or “guard.”
The genesis of this festivity is deeply rooted in local traditions, religious beliefs and… a tad of imperial history, because the event is dedicated to one of Rome’s greatest leaders, Constantine. The event involves a grand procession on horseback, which follows a designated route leading to the sanctuary dedicated to the Roman Emperor Constantine – referred to locally as Santu Antinu. An Emperor who is also a saint? Well, if you remember some stuff about ancient history, you know it’s all true.
