Joe Juavinett celebrated his 100th birthday on Sept. 29. Juavinett was born in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., one of eight children of Italian immigrants. In 1915, life was harsh, our country was fighting World War I and Woodrow Wilson was president.
As a young boy, Joe sold apples on the street, when hard work was expected by young children. Death was a constant and children died young from now treatable diseases. Two of his siblings died as children. Juavinett worked selling newspapers on whatever corner he could get, and graduated grammar school in June 1929.
