
A Coral Springs architectural designer created a monument to honor the Checkertails of World War II.
The 325th Fighter Group of the U.S. Army Air Force, with three squadrons assigned to it, was nicknamed the Checkertails because of the black-and-yellow checkered pattern on the tails of the aircraft. The Checkertails escorted bombers from Libya to Sicily starting in 1943, among other missions.
