The St. Paul's Italian Festival kicks off Friday evening, but preparations for the festival have been going on for months. On Wednesday, you could smell the onions and peppers from the parking lot as dozens of volunteers lined up to help cut and prepare the food for the festival. There are 440 pounds of onions to peel that will pair up with more than 500 pounds of sausage.
In the kitchen, the bakers were mixing up the batter for the famous Italian love cake. This festival has become a tradition for the families who attend and for the volunteers who make it a reality. The festival begins Friday after the pasta fagioli dinner at 5 p.m. and runs through Sunday at St. Paul Roman Catholic Church at West16th and Walnut streets.
