A scientific institute of private, Italian extraction, among the top ranked in the world, and just behind an entirely public one. They are both from Milan and are the European Institute of Oncology (IEO) and the National Cancer Institute (Int).  They ranked 11th and 13th, respectively, in the World's Best Specialized Hospitals 2023 ranking compiled by Newsweek regarding the 300 best cancer hospitals or oncology departments in the world.

The ranking complements the ranking of the 300 best "generalist" hospitals in the world, also by Newsweek and Statista, where Policlinico Gemelli in Rome, first among Italian hospitals, ranked 38. In this ranking Italy has done quite well: in the world top 100 there are 5 of our hospitals and 13 are in the top 250. But in the rankings concerning hospitals according to specialty things change, Europe and Italy rank better.

Eleven disciplines are evaluated, in which facilities and departments from 28 countries around the world are measured: cardiology, cardiac surgery, endocrinology, neurology, neurosurgery, orthopedics, gastroenterology, pediatric urology, pulmonology and oncology. This year the facilities evaluated were 300 in oncology and cardiology, 200 for pediatrics, 150 for cardiac surgery and endocrinology, and 125 for the other branches.

In the case of oncology out of 300 evaluations Milan is in the front row with the European Institute of Oncology created by Umberto Veronesi in 12th place, the Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori in 17th place and the Istituto Clinico Humanitas in 25th. They are followed by Policlinico Gemelli (38 ), Niguarda Hospital in Milan (41 ), Pascale Institute in Naples (46 ), Molinette in Turin (60 place), the Department of Oncology of the AO of Padua (64 ), the UO of Oncology of San Raffaele in Milan (78 ), and Irccs in Candiolo (Turin): a total of ten facilities in the top 100 places.
