Italy’s railways are in the midst of their most ambitious overhaul in decades - a transformation fueled by massive investment, advanced technology, and a drive for greater connectivity. A long-term development plan allocates more than €100 billion through 2029, with €62 billion dedicated specifically to infrastructure. The goal is to improve passenger travel, freight transport, and intermodal links, creating a faster, safer, and greener network nationwide.
A significant push comes from national recovery funding, which has activated more than 1,200 work sites across the country. About 500 are focused on essential maintenance, while another 700 are delivering new tracks, tunnels, stations, and other major upgrades.
