Tuscany has become the first region in Italy to adopt a law regulating assisted suicide, also known as assisted death—a practice in which, under specific conditions, a person self-administers a drug to end their life. Assisted suicide has been legal in Italy since 2019, when a Constitutional Court ruling deemed the previous ban unconstitutional.
However, despite repeated calls from the Court, the national parliament has never come close to passing a law to define the procedures and timelines for accessing assisted suicide. The newly approved law in Tuscany does just that: it consists of six articles, each clearly outlining the roles, procedures, and timelines for accessing assisted death within the region.
