The recreated Italian Festival at the Kingston waterfront on Sunday showed plenty of potential and sent many people home with full bellies and a tune or two in their heads. Backed by the newly formed Ulster County Italian-American Foundation, the festival flexed its muscle as an up-and-comer among the region's many cultural celebrations.
Internationally known opera stars like Maria Todaro lit up the stage at T.R. Gallo Park, while street-side accordion players commanded a presence of their own. There were even such novelty attractions as fully dressed Roman soldiers on hand to take pictures with visitors, a kissing booth and plenty of vino, heaps of lasagna and vats of deep-fried dough to endear visitors.
