In the early years of the 20th century, new immigrants to the United States from Italy struggled to gain acceptance in many parts of American society. That discrimination led to the formation of a service organization for Italian-Americans in Waterbury that continues to improve lives to this day.
Much has changed in Waterbury since the 1920's, but the building where the old Elton Hotel was located across the green still stands. It was here where Dr. Anthony Vastola and a small group of Italian American professionals founded Unico National.
