The 34th Annual Upper Ohio Valley Italian Heritage Festival kicked off Wednesday by celebrating the memory of 2016 "Italian-American of the Year" Joe Ripoly, who was present in spirit. Ripoly passed away May 14 — just days after learning he was to be this year's festival honoree.
The festival committee each year recognizes its Italian-American of the Year as the guest of honor during the festival's kickoff dinner, which took place Wednesday night at the McLure Hotel in Wheeling. The festival itself gets underway Friday at Heritage Port and continues through Sunday.
