In Washington DC, the federal capital of the United States, new subway vehicles built by Hitachi Rail but with an Italian "touch" are about to arrive. The conception, design and project, in fact, were conceived in our country and will be built in the new factory in Hagerstown, which will open next June in Maryland.

Here the first order of the 8000 Series for 256 coaches will be built, with options up to a maximum number of 800 coaches after completion of the first order. Including options, the value of the contract, signed in 2021, is about $2.2 billion.

"The United States represents one of our key markets. Our subways are already in successful service in Honolulu and Miami. With the investment in the Hagerstown plant, our presence is consolidated and reaffirms our ambition for growth in the U.S." This was said by Luca D'Aquila, COO Hitachi Rail Group and CEO Hitachi Rail STS SpA. "The new 8000 Series subway cars will enhance passengers' travel experience. Our mission is to enable our customers to offer increasingly integrated and sustainable transportation services," he added. As confirmed by Michele Budetta, Executive Director, Deputy LoB Vehicles, Hitachi Rail Group, "The 8000 Series features the use of the most advanced digital solutions, both in the design phase and in commercial operation. These solutions enable remote diagnostic control and maintenance optimization, maximizing metro reliability."

The new vehicles will replace the previous 2000 and 3000 series, which have been in operation since the early 1980s. In particular, the coaches will meet the most sophisticated cyber-security requirements and will be equipped with the latest technology. For example, there will be screens with an updated passenger information system, Wi-Fi connection, high-definition security cameras, and an improved ventilation system. All vehicles will be equipped with remote control systems and digitally optimized maintenance.
