Violin-makers thrive in Italian region known for design

Acoustics aren't all that count in the making of a violin. Aesthetics do, too. As a result, the craft of stringed instruments is thriving in Italy — a country known for its love of beauty and long history of violin-making.

Antonio Stradivari made his prized violins in Cremona, but other cities in the Lombardy region — including Milan and nearby Pavia — have since adopted the pursuit. To 44-year-old maker Marco Brunello, the sculpted violin scroll distinguishes the artist and becomes his or her signature.
