The Ebell of Los Angeles - 743 S. Lucerne Boulevard - Los Angeles, California 90005: Old World vs New World: Italian Style
Comparing traditional Italian wines to their newfangled California cousins.
Our California climate is very similar to that of Italy so the early Italian immigrants found it easy to cultivate their native grape varietals during the late 19th century when they were the only ones really drinking wine. Most of those early vineyards, like Barbera and Grignolino, went fallow during Prohibition and what followed was plantings of fashionable French varietals like Cabernet and Chardonnay. Since then, many California winemakers have returned to plantings of now popular Italian varietals finding there is a strong market for them and that they grow especially well in many parts of our state.
