Fresh mozzarella cheese now is available four days a week in East Bay Township. Buzzelli Foods opened last week at 110 East Hammond Road, in Oleson’s Plaza East. The store also sells marinated knots and burrata — both made with fresh mozzarella — grab-and-go sandwiches, salads, muffins, coffee, Italian bowls, aprons and tote bags. A small grocery section features Italian items including spices, olive oils, pastas, sauces, biscotti and Detroit Italian Breadsticks.
Buzzelli Foods co-owners Kathy and Pat Gibbons took over the kitchen in the former Subway restaurant early this year. They intended to use only the kitchen portion of the former Subway space, but that changed. “It came with a storefront, and that was not anything we planned to do. But it’s kind of hard not to utilize it,” said Kathy, former Record-Eagle features editor, longtime columnist and former owner of the EuroStop restaurant in Traverse City.
