Trieste being named one of Italy's top 10 most livable cities shouldn't come as a surprise. This ancient port city, which has changed hands countless times throughout history and weathered the fierce Bora winds, is truly captivating. While it spent time under Roman rule, Trieste isn't traditionally Italian. The Austrian Habsburg influence is particularly evident, especially in the local cuisine where you'll find beer, sauerkraut, and apple strudel featured prominently on menus.
Not strictly Italian, perhaps, although the Roman Empire ruled here for a long time. But it was mainly the Austrians and the Habsburgs who gave Trieste its status, something you can still notice today in the region’s cuisine, where beer, sauerkraut, and apple strudel appear on nearly every menu.
