On July 4, a celebration of independence will be bringing a city to life, but it won't be in America. In 1996, a friendship was formed between two cities: Aiken, South Carolina, and Orvieto, Italy. The organization Partners In Friendship, also known as PIF, was the result.
Former PIF president George Custodi met Italian artist Livio Orazio Valentini and they talked about pairing the two cities, one from the old world and one from the new; thus, the partnership was born, according to a story on USC Aiken's website.
