Today is April 25th, and every year on this day, Italy celebrates its liberation from Nazi-fascism. This year, the anniversary marks a round figure: 80 years since April 25, 1945. That day became the symbol of the liberation of much of the national territory by the partisan forces and the Allied forces, ending the Nazi occupation and the Italian Social Republic. Even after 80 years, there are still those who divide over this day, which should instead unite everyone in the name of freedom and democracy.
But every April 25th, unless with a few commendable exceptions, people forget about those who came from other countries to help us: many of them lost their lives for us. There were troops from the United Kingdom, Canada, France, Poland, Greece, Yugoslavia, and Romania. But the highest number of foreign soldiers who landed in Italy, who liberated it, and who lost their lives for us, is that of American soldiers. It is to them that we direct our eternal gratitude.
