In a country where sweltering summers are hotter than ever, city streets are increasingly crowded, and tourist hotspots can feel overrun, Italians are rediscovering an age-old refuge: the mountains. The Mountains of Italy Report 2025 tells the story of a quiet but powerful shift - a movement away from the bustle of the big cities toward the fresh air and open spaces of higher altitudes.
In this vision of the future, the mountains are no longer the forgotten edges of the map. They are vibrant centers of life, creativity, and possibility. Over the past few years, more than 100,000 people have packed up and made the move to Italy’s Alps or Apennines. And if the survey numbers are any indication, they won’t be the last - 56% of Italians say they’d happily trade urban life for a mountain home.
