Banks: fewer and fewer branches across Italy

The trend of banks "disengaging" from Italian territory continues unabated. Nearly half of all Italian municipalities are now without a bank branch (3,381 municipalities, accounting for 42.8% of the total). In 2024 alone, 508 branches were closed, bringing the total number below 20,000. The reasons for this decline include the rise of digital payments as well as the economic, demographic, and social downturn in certain areas of the country.
 
As banking desertification spreads to larger population centers, the number of people without access to banking services—or at serious risk of losing it—is also increasing. Approximately 11 million Italians are now affected, half a million more than just a year ago.
