In the cannon of Italian cheeses, burrata isn’t exactly niche—often described as a cousin to the mozzarella, but with a rich and creamy center, it can also be prepared and eaten in the same way. But over the last few years it’s seen a huge surge in popularity outside of Italy.
In 2022 TimeOut London asked ‘Why the f*ck is there so much burrata in London’, and earlier this year TasteAtlas reflected the trend by ranking it at number three in their list for the top 50 cheeses of the world (with Italian cheeses occupying a total of 18 spots). Recent data shows that there has been a 900% increase in Google searches (in English) for burrata over the last 10 years; with the US representing the main export market for the cheese at 29%.
