Castello di Campello Alto in Umbria is a fortified settlement that rises on top of a hill and overlooks the Spoleto valley. Dating back to the fourteenth century, today you can admire much of its original structure still intact.
According to the most accredited testimonies, Castello di Campello Alto was built by the will of the baron of Burgundy Rovero di Champeaux, around the tenth century. The baron, who came to Italy with the Duke of Spoleto, was granted the fief Gualdi Ranieri, later confirmed by the Duke’s son, Holy Roman Emperor, in 896. It is precisely from Rovero di Champeaux that the Campello family and the name of the village itself derives.
