Cherry Season in Marostica: A Celebration of Flavor and Heritage

Have you ever heard about the Marostica cherry, or ciliegia di Marostica? This luscious cherry variety, cultivated in a small area of the Veneto region – specifically in the province of Vicenza – is known for its sweetness, firmness, vivid color, and for being a symbol of cultural identity and local pride. It is protected by the European Union’s PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) designation, which ensures that every cherry bearing the name originates from the defined territory and meets strict quality standards.

The story of this cherry is deeply connected with the town of Marostica itself, a place perhaps best known for its life-sized chess match reenacted every two years in the town square. This tradition commemorates a 15th-century legend, which is also linked to the cherry’s origins. According to the tale, in 1454, two noble knights, Rinaldo d’Angarano and Vieri da Vallonara, both vied for the affection of Lionora, the daughter of the local lord, Taddeo Parisio.
