The European Cultural Routes are cross-border journeys that help travelers explore how Europeans have lived and interacted since ancient times. The concept was launched by the Council of Europe in 1987. One of the latest additions to this network is Saint Francis’ Ways: European Route of Franciscan Heritage, which has now been officially recognized as part of the Council of Europe’s cultural legacy.
This recognition comes just ahead of a major milestone: the 800th anniversary of the death of St. Francis of Assisi, which will be commemorated in 2026. With its headquarters in Assisi, in the heart of Umbria, the route is built around the life and teachings of St. Francis, promoting his spiritual message and fostering dialogue between cultures.
