Dear Friends of Italian Innovators, Welcome back! My core content for March is a profile of Italian designer Giorgetto Giugiaro, author of innumerable automobile masterpieces and named “Car Designer of the Century” in 1999. From the Volkswagen Golf to the Fiat Panda, from the Maserati Ghibli to the DeLorean-DMC 12, Giugiaro styled some of the most memorable models in the automotive industry.
His imagination is also behind Nikon cameras, Seiko watches, the cathedral organ of Lausanne, and even a pasta shape by Voiello. In this episode, I explore the roots of Italy’s fascination with car making, the sources of Giugiaro’s creativity, and his method for turning art into design, and cars into original pieces of dynamic yet everlasting beauty.
