Abandoned mines could be a new frontier of tourism. It's the trend that has been emerging in Sardinia, in the Sulcis Iglesiente region, where visitors are flocking to visit the galleries that until twenty years ago were used to extract carbon from the mountains: in just six months, three sites have been visited by approximately 35,000 people.
The area's reconversion began almost silently twenty years ago and it has had to endure a long series of reclamation projects, some of which yet to be implemented, while tourism projects were slowly developed and put in place. The most visited sites are the Porto Flavia gallery, in the Masua mine, the Henry gallery in Buggerru and the Santa Barbara cave in the mine of San Giovanni in Iglesias.
