Italian Artist Uses Dry Fields to Create Environmental Statement as Northern Italy Suffers Worst Drought in 70 Years

This Italian artist transformed barren, dry lands into an environmental statement as Northern Italy suffers its worst drought in 70 years. Italian artist Dario Gambarin used fields in Veneto, Italy, for his latest canvas. Gambarin carved “SAVE WATER” into the dry corn and wheat fields using a tractor, plow, and rotary harrow.

Gambarin created two pieces called “Save Water” and “The Scream of the Corn,” which were both carved into land in the Veneto countryside. The first piece is a 258,333.85 square-foot wide drop of water. Inside the drop, he wrote ‘save’ and for his second piece, he carved ‘water’ across a 290,625 square-foot field.
