If you are wondering which countries you can enter with an Italian passport without the need for a visa, you should know that our passport stands out for its strength globally. Not all passports hold the same power; their strength varies based on geopolitical, economic and security factors.
This concept is illustrated annually by the London-based consulting firm Henley & Partners, which has been developing the Passport Index based on IATA data since 2006. This index highlights the citizenships that offer the greatest benefits in terms of foreign travel. Italy has risen to second place in the world, from 189 to 190 countries that can be visited with a passport alone.
There are only 36 countries where Italian citizens must present a visa to gain entry: Afghanistan, Algeria, Angola, Azerbaijan, Benin, Bhutan, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, China, Democratic Republic of Congo, Republic of Congo, Côte d'Ivoire, Cuba, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guinea, India, Kenya, Liberia, Libya, Mali, Nauru, Niger, Nigeria, North Korea, Papua New Guinea, Russia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Turkmenistan, Uganda and Yemen.
