A known protein has now been linked to obsessively eating non-stop. This remarkable discovery was made by a team of Italian researchers working at Boston University. The protein receptor, TAAR1, present on neurons of the prefrontal cortex, if not fully operative, can cause a person to eat compulsively in times of stress. So-called binge eating.
Thanks to experiments on mice who when treated with a molecular therapy that reactivated TAAR1 showed promising results, the experts are optimistic that this discovery could be fundamental in future research on eating disorders.
