In Italy this is tax season, the time when citizens file their income tax returns, the documents that determine how much they owe the government. Since 2005, every Italian taxpayer submitting their return has had the option to allocate five per thousand (cinque per mille) of their taxes to a certified organization engaged in socially beneficial activities. When a taxpayer makes this choice, 0.5% of the actual taxes they owe are directed to the organization they select, at no additional cost to them.

In 2024, more than 91,000 entities in Italy will receive a total of €523 million thanks to the income tax returns filed by Italian citizens. At the top of the list are Third Sector entities (volunteer organizations, social promotion, and philanthropy)—68,452 in total—followed by amateur sports associations (13,825), scientific research institutions (467), healthcare organizations (107), cultural and environmental heritage organizations (228), and protected area management entities (24). Additionally, 7,909 municipalities are also eligible recipients.
