Italy’s spectacular grottos poised to attract more visitors

It's not often mentioned, but there is some movement down there. Despite the number of visitors having fallen for the past two years, Italian cave tourism is enjoying good health and, according to estimates by professionals, 2015's performance should show a 5% growth.

The Bel Paese is rich with attractions in this very particular market niche: there are 52 visitable grottos, and they are visited by 1.5 million tourist per year bringing in a total of €25 million in direct and indirect revenue. This is a phenomenon that is creating employment opportunities, considering the 1,000 or so employees that, in various capacities, work to ensure accessibility of the caves.
