Italy’s demographic shift: toward a positive future?

Italy’s younger generations are living longer on average, but 2024 marked a new low in births, with fewer than 380,000 newborns. Meanwhile, alternative family structures are becoming more common and accepted, and the country is seeing a significant drop in school dropout rates.

These are just a few of the findings from the latest "Population Report – Toward a Positive Demography", which takes stock of Italy’s demographic trends and offers tools for looking ahead. Italy’s demographic situation is unique. In most international rankings, the country stands out for both its high life expectancy and very low birth rate.
