Italy’s telemedicine platform aims to transform healthcare

Italy’s healthcare system is under pressure from structural challenges, an aging population, and growing regional disparities: rethinking sustainable care models has become an urgent priority. With concerns that human and financial resources may not be sufficient in the future to provide adequate care for all, reorganization is essential. While digitalization is one possible path forward, it’s far from a guaranteed solution.

Italy’s National Telemedicine Platform, officially launched on February 4, represents a major opportunity to rethink how people access healthcare services, monitor chronic conditions, and maintain continuity of care. The platform features a central digital infrastructure connected to 21 interoperable regional and autonomous province systems, designed to support telehealth services across the country.
