The harsh upland of the Carso is buffeted by the wind but well-endowed with characteristic little villages, meadows and scented grasses. In this area, with its typically red soil, traditional vines are planted near Trieste; carefully preserved over the years and thanks to a contemporary wine-making culture that is responsive to tradition, these vines now produce excellent wines, such as Terrano and Vitovska.
