Liquidity in Italian bank accounts rises again: almost 20 billion euros more in one year

After two consecutive years of decline, in 2024 the overall balance of savings for families and businesses showed an increase, reaching 1.363.6 billion euros, up 19.8 billion compared to 1.343.8 billion euros in 2023, a growth of 1.5%. This marks a shift in trend compared to the previous two years, during which the erosion of liquid savings was driven by the sharp rise in inflation and the subsequent increase in the cost of living.
 
Between 2021 and 2023, families and businesses gradually dipped into their reserves to cope with rising prices, leading to a reduction in available liquidity in bank deposits by 136.3 billion euros (-9.2%) from the peak of 1,480.1 billion euros recorded in 2021. Despite the recovery in the last twelve months, current levels are still lower than those of 2021, with a gap of 116.5 billion euros (-7.9%).
