Between 2023 and 2024, Italy saw a sharp rise in both the number of citizens moving abroad and the arrival of foreign nationals. According to the latest report from ISTAT, approximately 270,000 Italians emigrated during the two-year period—a 39.3% increase compared to the previous biennium. At the same time, about 760,000 foreign citizens immigrated to Italy, marking a 31.1% jump and setting a new high over the last decade.
Annual departures of Italian citizens averaged 175,000 across the two years, climbing from 158,000 in 2023 to 191,000 in 2024. This increase was driven almost entirely by Italian nationals leaving the country, with figures rising from 99,000 in 2022 to 156,000 in 2024. Meanwhile, the number of foreign nationals emigrating from Italy remained stable at just under 40,000 annually.
