Castel del Monte has a way to charm its visitors. Architecturally unique and historically precious, this medieval dwelling located some 15 miles from Andria and about 50 from Bari, in Apulia, had been constructed in the 13th century to meet the requests of Frederick II, emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. Its beauty and, as we will see, its peculiarities, made of it one of the most visited attraction in the Belpaese, as well as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Even the silver screen paid homage to Castel del Monte when Jean-Jacques Annaud, director of iconic The Name of the Rose, movie inspired by Umberto Eco’s novel, took inspiration from its architecture to structure the library at the heart of narration. Another director, the Italian Matteo Garrone, used it as a backdrop for his Tale of Tales (2015) and in 2017, Castel del Monte became a set for some scenes of Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman.
