Napoli 2026 wins the 26th title of "European Capital of Sport," it will be the fourth Italian municipality, following Milan 2009, Turin 2015 and Genoa 2024. The official announcement came from Aces Europe, Federation of European Capitals and Cities of Sport, after it finished the visits of the evaluation commissions to the candidate cities for 2026, namely the finalists Naples and Zaragoza.
Next December 7, at the EU Parliament in Brussels, the City of Genoa will in fact pick up the baton from Glasgow as European Capital of Sport 2024. On the same occasion, the five Italian European Communities of Sport 2024 (Cuore di Valtellina, Flegra dello Sport, Maremma Toscana Sud, Pontina dello Sport and Terra dei Due Laghi) and also for Italy, Veneto as European Region of Sport 2024 will be awarded.
The title of European Capital of Sport thus rewards for the first time an Italian city in the South, with our country proving to be at the forefront in promoting motor activity, grassroots sports, and health.
